Photosynthesis is a vital process in which plants and some other organisms convert light energy into chemical energy. Which of the following represents the balanced equation for the overall reaction of photosynthesis?
A) C₆H₁₂O₆ + 6CO₂ + energy → 6CO₂ + 6H₂O
B) 6CO₂ + 6H₂O + energy → C₆H₁₂O₆ + 6O₂
C) C₆H₁₂O₆ + 6CO₂ + energy → 12CO₂ + 6H₂O
D) 6CO₂ + 6H₂O → C₆H₁₂O₆ + 6CO₂ + energy
E) C₆H₁₂O₆ + 6CO₂ → 6CO₂ + 6H₂O + energy

Q22 - Photosynthesis

The correct answer is B) 6CO₂ + 6H₂O + energy → C₆H₁₂O₆ + 6O₂.
Photosynthesis takes in carbon dioxide and water and gives out glucose and oxygen:
6CO₂ + 6H₂O + light → C₆H₁₂O₆ + 6O₂
If you know that glucose and O₂ are the products, every other option falls apart: they either have glucose as a reactant or release CO₂, which is respiration, not photosynthesis.
