Which of the following statements regarding the Golgi apparatus is correct?
A) Before exiting the cell, the proteins packaged in the Golgi apparatus are transported to the nucleus for translation verification.
B) There is no Golgi apparatus in neuronal cells.
C) Lysosomes digest the vesicles released from the Golgi apparatus so the proteins can be released from the cell.
D) The Golgi apparatus processes and packages proteins to be exported from the cell.
E) The Golgi apparatus processes lipid molecules as they enter the cell.

Q28 - The endomembrane system and protein sorting
Pinned
The correct answer is D) The Golgi apparatus processes and packages proteins to be exported from the cell.
The Golgi takes proteins from the rough ER, modifies, sorts and packages them into vesicles. Some go to the membrane for secretion, others to lysosomes.
A and C describe things that don't happen: proteins don't go back to the nucleus to be checked, and secretory vesicles fuse with the membrane rather than being digested by lysosomes. Neurons certainly have a Golgi, since they secrete a lot.
