A pH meter is used to test 0.1 mol L⁻¹ aqueous solutions of the following compounds:
1. CH₃COOH
2. NaCl
3. H₂SO₄
4. Ba(OH)₂
5. HNO₃
Which of the following correctly lists these solutions in order of increasing pH?
A) 3, 4, 1, 5, 2
B) 2, 1, 4, 5, 3
C) 3, 5, 1, 2, 4
D) 5, 3, 1, 2, 4
E) 4, 2, 1, 5, 3

Q35 - The pH scale
Pinned
The correct answer is C) 3, 5, 1, 2, 4.
All at 0.1 M, from most acidic to most basic:
H₂SO₄ gives two H⁺ per molecule, so pH ≈ 0.7
HNO₃ gives one, so pH 1
CH₃COOH is weak, so pH ≈ 2.9
NaCl is neutral, pH 7
Ba(OH)₂ gives two OH⁻, so pH ≈ 13.3
3, 5, 1, 2, 4
The only tricky pair is H₂SO₄ and HNO₃: both are strong, but sulfuric acid releases twice as much H⁺.
