According to the Brønsted−Lowry theory:
A) an acid is a substance which can provide a pair of electrons
B) a strong acid forms a conjugate with a weak base
C) the conjugate acid is the product of the bonding of the base with an OH⁻ ion
D) a base is a compound which can donate OH⁻ ions
E) the conjugate base is formed by an acid that has acquired an OH⁻ ion

Q47 - The concept of acid and base
Pinned
The correct answer is B) a strong acid forms a conjugate with a weak base.
In Brønsted–Lowry terms, the stronger an acid is at giving away H⁺, the weaker its conjugate base is at taking it back. So a strong acid has a weak conjugate base (HCl and Cl⁻, for example).
A is the Lewis definition (and of a base, not an acid), D is the Arrhenius definition, and C and E talk about OH⁻ where it should be H⁺.
