Oxidative phosphorylation is a metabolic pathway:
A) through which fatty acid synthesis occurs
B) through which fatty acids are broken down by removing two carbon atoms at a time
C) through which the amino group resulting from the degradation of amino acids is eliminated
D) which represents the final stage of the anabolism of amino acids, carbohydrates, and fatty acids
E) through which the energy stored in reduced coenzymes is used for the synthesis of ATP

Q13 - The electron transport chain
Pinned
The correct answer is E) through which the energy stored in reduced coenzymes is used for the synthesis of ATP.
Oxidative phosphorylation is the last stage of respiration. NADH and FADH₂ hand their electrons to the electron transport chain, which pumps protons, and the protons flow back through ATP synthase. In short, the energy in reduced coenzymes is used to make ATP.
Removing two carbons at a time is β-oxidation, and getting rid of amino groups is deamination and the urea cycle. Oxidative phosphorylation is catabolic, not part of building molecules.
