IMAT 2025 · Question 20

Q20 - The role of enzymes

In competitive inhibition: A) the inhibitor binds to the substrate, preventing a reaction with the enzyme B) the inhibitor prevents the release of products from the active site C) the inhibitor binds to the enzyme-cholesterol complex D) the inhibitor and the substrate compete for the active site of the enzyme E) the inhibitor binds to the allosteric site and prevents the substrate from binding to the enzyme
Pinned

The correct answer is D) the inhibitor and the substrate compete for the active site of the enzyme.

In competitive inhibition, the inhibitor looks like the substrate and fights it for the active site. Add enough substrate and it wins: Vmax stays the same, but Km goes up.

Binding to an allosteric site (E) is non-competitive inhibition, the one it's usually confused with.
