Oxidative phosphorylation involves:
A) exclusively mitochondrial matrix proteins
B) only nuclear proteins
C) exclusively peripheral proteins
D) exclusively integral membrane proteins
E) both membrane proteins and mobile molecules

Q22 - The electron transport chain

The correct answer is E) both membrane proteins and mobile molecules.
Oxidative phosphorylation needs both membrane proteins and mobile carriers. The complexes and ATP synthase sit in the inner mitochondrial membrane, while coenzyme Q (moving within the membrane) and cytochrome c (in the intermembrane space) shuttle electrons between them.
"Exclusively integral proteins" fails because of those two carriers: coenzyme Q isn't a protein at all, and cytochrome c is only loosely attached.
