IMAT 2025 · Question 23

Q23 - The electron transport chain

How are the reduced coenzymes that are formed during biological oxidation reoxidized? A) By direct action of oxygen B) Through the respiratory chain C) Through the process of beta oxidation D) Through the passage of electrons in ATP synthase E) With the synthesis of hormones
Pinned

The correct answer is B) Through the respiratory chain.

NADH and FADH₂ get turned back into NAD⁺ and FAD by giving their electrons to the respiratory chain. The electrons pass along to oxygen at the end.

Oxygen doesn't take electrons straight from NADH (A), and β-oxidation produces NADH and FADH₂ rather than using them up.
