IMAT 2025 · Question 26

Q26 - Lipid metabolism and beta-oxidation

It is more advantageous for humans to store energy as triglycerides in adipose tissue rather than as proteins in muscles because triglycerides in adipose tissue contain: A) more calories and less water B) more calories and more water C) fewer calories and more water D) more oxygen and less nitrogen E) fewer calories and less water
Pinned

The correct answer is A) more calories and less water.

Fat beats protein as an energy store for two reasons. It has more energy per gram (about 9 kcal against 4), and it's stored with very little water, while protein and glycogen carry a lot of water with them.

So for the same weight, fat holds far more energy, which matters when you have to carry your reserves around.
