Q60 - Fluid mechanics

A stationary liquid exerts on the walls of the container that holds it: A) forces in any direction relative to the walls B) no forces on the walls, only pressure C) forces always parallel to the walls at every point D) forces equal to zero E) forces always perpendicular to the walls at every point

The correct answer is E) forces always perpendicular to the walls at every point.

A liquid at rest can't push sideways along a surface. If it did, it would flow and wouldn't be at rest. So the force it exerts on the walls is always perpendicular to them.

That's also why pressure is defined as the perpendicular force per unit area.
