Q17 - Anatomy and physiology of humans

What is the primary function of a tendon? A) To transmit nervous impulses to the muscle B) To control the production of actin C) To connect muscles to bones D) To protect the heart E) To store energy for the muscle
Pinned

The correct answer is C) To connect muscles to bones.

A tendon is a cord of dense connective tissue rich in collagen. It attaches a skeletal muscle to a bone and transmits the force of contraction, so the bone moves. Do not confuse tendons with ligaments, which connect bone to bone.

A) Incorrect: Nerve impulses reach the muscle through motor neurons, at the neuromuscular junction.

B) Incorrect: Actin is produced inside the muscle cells themselves, under the control of their genes.

C) Correct: Tendons connect muscles to bones.

D) Incorrect: The heart is protected by the rib cage, the sternum and the pericardium.

E) Incorrect: Tendons can stretch and recoil slightly, but energy storage is not their primary function. The muscle’s energy reserves (glycogen, creatine phosphate) are inside the muscle fibres.
