At a given temperature, the Kc value of a gaseous exothermic reaction is equal to 7 × 10⁻⁵ dm⁶ mol⁻².
Which one of the following statements is correct?
A) At a lower temperature the value of Kc will increase
B) The position of equilibrium lies over to the right-hand side
C) There are more moles on the right-hand side of the equilibrium equation
D) Addition of a suitable catalyst will increase the equilibrium yield obtained
E) An increase in pressure will increase the time taken to reach equilibrium

Q40 - Equilibria in aqueous solution
Pinned
The correct answer is A) At a lower temperature the value of Kc will increase.
The reaction is exothermic, so cooling it pushes the equilibrium forward and Kc gets bigger at lower temperature.
The units also tell you something: dm⁶ mol⁻² means there are fewer moles of gas on the right, not more (so C is wrong). Kc = 7 × 10⁻⁵ is tiny, so the equilibrium lies to the left (B is wrong). A catalyst only gets you to equilibrium faster and doesn't change the yield (D).
