Lactic and alcoholic fermentation: when cells use them, their products, and why they regenerate NAD⁺ so that glycolysis can continue.
Sample questions
- Facultative anaerobes such as yeast switch to fermentation when oxygen runs out, whereas an obligate aerobe dies. The reason is that the obligate aerobe:
- AIs poisoned by the pyruvate it produces, which accumulates without oxygen
- BLoses its mitochondria in the absence of oxygen and cannot rebuild them in time
- CCannot take up glucose without oxygen, because its transporters need ATP from respiration
- DHas no way to regenerate NAD⁺ without the respiratory chain, so glycolysis also stops
- ECannot perform glycolysis at all, since it obtains all its ATP from fatty acids
- During lactic fermentation, pyruvic acid is:
- Aoxidised
- Bphosphorylated
- Cdecarboxylated
- Dreduced
- Edephosphorylated
